080a overviewThe purpose of formation in the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius is to help the candidate faithfully respond to his divine vocation and to form him in the way of life, charism and spirituality of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius. This time of initiation should actually and concretely form the candidate in the life and apostolate he will live thereafter. There are spiritual, intellectual, apostolic and human aspects to this formation, which help candidates become mature Christian persons capable of living the vows and fulfilling the apostolate of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius.

079a are you calledWhat is a vocation?

The word vocation is derived from the Latin word vocare, “to call,” and so a vocation is a calling. Above all, everyone has a vocation to holiness, a universal call to holiness, which Christ gives to us in the Gospel (John 13:34): I give you a new commandment: love one another.

078a postulantsOnce an applicant is accepted, he will be informed of the entrance date and what personal items he is permitted to bring with him. Once he moves into the residence he becomes a Postulant. The period of Postulancy lasts for three months, but may be extended by the Superior.

074a admissionAdmission to the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius is open to Catholic men who have expressed a desire to lead a life based upon the Rule of Saint Augustine and in accordance with the Constititions of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius.

077a music 5The purpose of the Novitiate is to determine whether the Novice truly has a vocation to the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius.

During the period of Novitiate the Novice continues to familiarize himself with religious life in the context of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius.

He continues to acquire a greater understanding of the rich liturgical history of the Roman Catholic Church by participating in the Present Rites of the Church as well as its Traditional Rites, and to develop in the communal life of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius as indicated in the Constitutions.

A young man interested in pursuing a vocation with the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius should first contact the community in order to arrange for a visit. All interested applicants are asked to live with the community for at least a few days to becoming more closely acquainted with the common life in the Canons Regular and its charism.

076a juniorThe Juniorate encompasses the period between a member’s first profession of vows and his final profession of vows. The purpose of the Juniorate is to prepare the Junior for his profession of final vows.

If a member of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius discerns that he also has a call to the priesthood, intellectual preparation through proper theological studies takes place during the period of Juniorate according to the Code of Canon Law.

Those professed members of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius, who have successfully completed the required theological studies and who have been judged as suitable and worthy candidates, may be advanced to the Diaconate and the Priesthood. All prescriptions and qualifications pertaining to this as outlined in Canons 1031-1032 must be faithfully followed.

071a vows 4After renewing vows during the period of Junioriate, members of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius profess final vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Before final profession of vows, members of the Institute are to draw up a will, that is valid in a civil court, dispensing of all of their material and monetary possessions.
