018a dc 1 thumbThe Canons Regular of St. John Cantius participated in the Pontifical Mass in the Extraordinary Form in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the ascension of Benedict XVI to the throne of Peter. Ad multos annos! His Excellency, Bishop Edward J. Slattery of the Diocese of Tulsa, Oklahoma, was the celebrant of this Mass, which was the first traditional Latin Mass at the Shrine’s High Altar in over forty years. Rev. C. Frank Phillips, C.R., Founder and Superior of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius, assisted in choir, while Rev. Bartholomew Juncer, S.J.C. served as deacon of the Mass.

On Wednesday, March 31, 2010, during the month of St. Joseph, and on Wednesday, the day devoted to St. Joseph, Rev. C. Frank Phillips, CR, Superior and Founder of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius blessed a statue of St. Joseph with prayers from the 1962 Rituale Romanum and enthroned him on top of the Canonry on Fry Street.

His Excellency, Bishop Cote, thanked the Canons for serving the Mass in a letter in which he wrote: you gave dignity and grace to this observance and greatly added to its success. I know that those who attended appreciated all your efforts.”

On July 7, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI launched one of the boldest papal initiatives since Vatican II: He declared that the traditional liturgy of the Roman rite, which he said was never abrogated, was officially available to all the Church’s faithful alongside the new liturgy of Pope Paul VI. Pope John Paul II had allowed for the traditional Latin Mass on a limited basis since the 1980s; with his motu proprio Summorum Pontificum Pope Benedict removed the remaining restrictions.

016a head of st john chyrsostomThe skull of St John Chrysostom, a prized relic of the Russian Orthodox Church, has not left Russia since it arrived there during the reign of Tsar Mikhail Feodorovich, in the early 1600s. With the blessing of Patriarch Kirill I (Кирилл, Патриарх Московский и всея Руси) of Moscow, the skull of Saint John Chrysostom, which is enshrined in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior, was venerated in New York City February 12 2010. The seminarians of the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius were privileged to be among those invited to venerate the relic of this early Father of the Church.
